Snovyda (The Sleepwalker) is a four-movement electronic suite by ummsbiaus. It can be heard in a dark room that is gradually transforming into a long corridor, creepy and untrodden as liminal space. When your stressed-out brain makes you feel drowsy, its functions are AI-like. Before fully shutting down, it creates its own world somewhere in-between sleep and wakefulness.
Snovyda is an experiment with the sound perception when you fall asleep to music. In this hypnagogic state, when your brain and body immerse into sleep, music sounds completely different. The voice becomes transparent, unimportant, certain sound patterns come to the fore. They are hypnotic, repetitive. They distort, it is difficult to grasp the tonality and tempo. You hear the shadow-play in the light of the voice, you experience pressure and tinnitus in your ears. This somnambula suite, ghostly weaving itself into the rhythm of the clock, resonates in a half-sleepy whisper. Snovyda makes one go back to the roots as it always happens in a dream.
I. Hypnagogia is a synthesis track to Snovyda Suite that harbours the emotions a dreamer can experience whilst falling asleep. Hypnagogia is known to connect wakefulness and sleep. During this state, one can experience sensitive, audio or visual hallucinations. This track symbolises the first stage of the sleep cycle.
II. Snovyda (The Sleepwalker) is a nocturnal dream that the summer wind whispers into the ear with its cool lips. In such dreams, one can speak languages unknown to this day and hear music in reverse. In this track you’ll hear words from an ancient poem in Proto-Slavic. This track is an interweaving of wakefulness and sleep, a phase of shallow immersion. It symbolises the second stage of the sleep cycle.
III. Kolyskova (The Lullaby) is a pure sound of a dream. In a state of deep sleep when the brain is on the most profound level of immersion one can hear repetitive sound patterns and words the sense of which cannot be uncoded at once but in fact they do mean a lot to a dreamer. This track symbolises the third stage of the sleep cycle.
IV. Mara (The Nighmare) is a track with kaleidoscopic sound, prism-like effects, as a mirror breaking into pieces to multiply reality. This track is about the chilling indifference of emotional exhaustion. It's about seeing yourself electrified and alive again at the end of a long, dark corridor, just for a moment. Mara is a pagan Slavic goddess associated with a dream. This track symbolises the fourth stage of the sleep cycle.
